Like any large parrot, training is a must. They require a large enclosure filled with tons of toys and dynamic perching. Ideally, the minimum cage size for this size bird is 40″x30″x75″ with a 1″bar spacing. Blue and Gold Macaws make an excellent family companion.

Housing
They will require a roomy cage, at least 3’x2’x5′. Provide sturdy perches, toys, both for playing and chewing. You can dedicate a room in your house for your bird, or you can put it in an outdoor aviary. Let it spend some time, preferably a minimum of 2-3 hours outside the cage.
Temperament
Their sociability and even sweet disposition make blue and gold macaws a great pet. Their intelligence, willingness to learn, and talking ability are a plus.
When allowed to socialize with a variety of people, blue and golds do very well adapting to different people and other birds. The blue and gold is a fantastic bird for tricks. They’re a popular headliner at bird shows, and many owners may even take them out around town with the help of bird leashes and car seats.
Around the house, these macaws may act like friendly dogs. They enjoy being near their owners and seek out attention. They are also content on their perch, watching the activity around them.
Feeding on Blue and Gold Macaw Parrots
Give your blue and gold commercially made pellet and seed mixes specially prepared for macaws. They also may like something that you’re having, and you can feel free to share as long as the food is nutritious. Chicken can be a good source of protein and also falls in the favorite foods category.
Avoid feeding the bird chocolate and avocado as both of these are toxic to them.
Care
Replace the food and water dishes daily with clean ones. The floor of the cage needs to be washed every other week, while the perches and toys should be washed every week.
Do complete disinfection of the whole cage at least once a year.
Bathe your pet every day either with a mist spray or a birdbath and let it dry out in the sun.
